In recent years and more so in recent months more and more websites are being blocked from being accessed. This is especially prevalent in the United Kingdom where court orders are regularly instructing the big ISPs to block certain sites. Mainly these sites are related to torrents or other sites which supposedly promote “copyright infringement” such as The Pirate Bay.

Many people ask me, how they can access torrents or sites that are previously blocked in the UK and elsewhere. The solution is rather simple but sounds like a complicated process. This is where you are wrong, there is a way to unblock said sites and to do this you need to enlist the help of a service called a Virtual Private Network aka VPN. A VPN is in layman’s terms a way of routing your normal internet connection to another internet connection and on to the final destination. For example, once you have connected to a VPN everything you do on the internet is then passed from your connection to a secure third party connection located in a remote location, this can be either in the same country as yourself or abroad.

Don’t worry, there are many companies out there who provide VPN services and many of them offer simple software which you download and with one or two simple clicks connect you to a server in a country of your choice. As soon as you are connected then you can freely surf any previously blocked site without worry. Even those providers who don’t have easy to use software, the majority of them have simple step by step guides to get yourself set up. The best part of a VPN is not only can you route your connection elsewhere but the connection between yourself and the VPN server is fully encrypted meaning even your ISP won’t know what you’re accessing because all they will see is encrypted data between yourself and the VPN server, the VPN server itself is the one that then sends on the request to the site you’re attempting to access and then passes it back (yes, encrypted again) to you, thus circumventing any blocks or restrictions put in place by your ISP.

A good and reliable VPN service will cost money but on the plus side these can cost as little as around US$3.33 per month if you sign up for a full year or a tiny bit more paying monthly. Be sure to check if they allow downloading torrents if you intend to actually access files rather than just access the site, two which do allow torrents and come recommended by us are PrivateInternetAccess or LiquidVPN. Many providers request that you use select servers in countries where regulations and rules are slightly more relaxed so be sure to double check.

When I first started using the internet back in the early 90’s this kind of situation would of been unheard of and even up until recently you would of been hard pressed to find a site that was actually blocked from being accessed directly. With the expansion of the internet it is undoubtedly true that copyright infringement has increased, from small scale underground sites to what is available now is a change of expeditious proportions.

In certain countries such as North Korea, China, Iran and others it has always been the case that they have either had a fully restricted internet service or a semi-restricted one. This was never the case in any western or civilised society and with countries with a democratic government came an open internet.

Commercial enterprise and money are now dictating which websites we can visit and which we can’t. As is the case in the United Kingdom it is now ever easier for large corporations to easily get court orders to block access to certain websites. It is a ludicrous situation that is in jeopardy of spiralling out of control. The question is, where does this stop? Will we see certain ports blocked or protocols? Why is it up to the courts to decide what you can and can not access. The mere act of accessing a website, any website, is not illegal. This is of course unless you view illegal material or download illegal material, but by simply accessing a website such as The Pirate Bay on which the main page has nothing illegal visible then the courts decide that you are not allowed to do this.

The list of sites blocked is growing ever larger and includes some of the more well known sites such as Fenopy, H33t, Kick Ass Torrents, First Row Sports, EZTV, 1337x, PrimeWire, Vodly, YIFY Torrents, Solar Movie & Tube+. 29 of these sites have been blocked in October and November 2013 alone nearly doubling the list of sites blocked in the UK in the most recent 2 months.

I don’t quite see this as right and it wasn’t the internet that I originally signed up to use all those years ago. So for those of you who feel the same then you may of headed over to The Pirate Bay or one of the many other blocked sites to be greeted with an image similar to the one on the right. I am sure you are as outraged as myself but many of you will have read the page and considered it a battle over. Now you can understand that it isn’t!

In the case of accessing websites that are blocked in the UK then you would need to make connection to a VPN server outside of the UK and not in another country where the same block exists, the same would be said if you tried to access a website in France that was blocked then you would need to access a server outside of France and again outside of the UK.

Well it’s been a while since my last post so I will try and make this one as short and as straight to the point as possible.

There are steps you should follow in order to start downloading torrents freely.

1- Press the following link to Download “Tor Browser” by clicking on the corresponding operating system you have.

Why we need Tor

Using Tor protects you against a common form of Internet surveillance known as “traffic analysis.” Traffic analysis can be used to infer who is talking to whom over a public network. Knowing the source and destination of your Internet traffic allows others to track your behavior and interests. This can impact your checkbook if, for example, an e-commerce site uses price discrimination based on your country or institution of origin. It can even threaten your job and physical safety by revealing who and where you are. For example, if you’re travelling abroad and you connect to your employer’s computers to check or send mail, you can inadvertently reveal your national origin and professional affiliation to anyone observing the network, even if the connection is encrypted.

2- After you download and install Tor you need to open your torrent client.

Most famous are uTorrent and BitTorrent but it doesn’t matter which one you have.

I have BitTorrent so you open the program and go to Options —then–> Preferences.

a window will open with General – UI settings – Directories – Connections – etc…

Click on Connections.

You need to modify all options so that they match those in the picture above.

Also make sure to tick/untick the corresponding boxes.

click ok. Close BitTorrent or uTorrent from system tray (bottom right next to clock)

3- Now after you have installed Tor you should find a folder named “Tor browser”

open it and double click “Start Tor Browser”

It will take a minute to launch soemtimes 2 and once it does you will have a message telling you:

Congratulations!

This browser is configured to use Tor.

4- Open bitTorrent again and add any torrent you would like to download preferably by clicking the MAGNET icon so the torrent is immediately added to the client.

once added, download will not start yet. 😛 you need to modify one more thing.

5- inside BitTorrent or uTorrent, Right click on the torrent you just added and click properties.

You should have something like the picture here above.

In order to make the download fast, you will need to add more trackers. A LOT MORE.

So you will need to copy the ALL the following Trackers and Paste them in that trackers box.

P.S: The skipped line between one tracker and another is meant to be there, as it is explain in the picture too.

Once you’ve done that click ok and VOILA.

Your torrent should start downloading any second. (give it a minute or 2)

Of course the speed will always depend on the number of seeds but this list of trackers will help you reach the biggest number of seeds.

6- Finally, of course you want to ask if you have to do this every time you want to download a torrent. Well basically, you only need to repeat 2 things from now on (after the first time)

whenever you wanna download a torrent, Mac os x charting software.

you open Tor browser

you open BitTorrent

you add Torrent from internet

you add the list of trackers in properties

and your torrent will start downloading 😀
